The mission of Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is to enrich the lives of young people, ages 3-18, of all cultures, through theatre and educational experiences of the highest quality.  Children’s Theatre programming includes professional productions, touring productions, in-school residencies, community outreach and education camps and classes.

Summer Education Interns

Ideal candidate possesses or is working toward a degree in theatre for youth and has substantial experience working with children ages 3-18.  Housing and stipend provided.

Responsibilities
The Summer Education Intern will serve an integral role in supporting summer educational programming.   Children’s Theatre provides Summer Camp experiences for 1500 students throughout a 10-week program with a variety of theatre day camps.   The Intern will have direct supervisory responsibilities with children ages 3 -18, including classroom assistance, drop-off and pick-up, snack time, and pre- and post-care.  Other responsibilities include administrative duties such as creating and maintaining roll sheets, scheduling, supplies, organization and registration.   In addition to these daily duties, Interns will have the opportunity to observe Children's Theatre Teaching Artists.

Timeline
The Intern contract is May 30, 2008 to August 15, 2008. Application deadline: February 29, 2008.

Stipend
The stipend for interns is $265 per week.  Housing is provided. Interns will hold W-2 employee status.

Junior Summer Interns

Junior interns are high school students who support Children’s Theatre Education Summer Camps. Junior interns must be rising 9th graders or above. Junior intern positions are unpaid and require week-long commitments. Interested applications must complete an application form and submit it to Jenny Cook, Education Enrichment Coordinator.

Fall & Winter Internships

Children’s Theatre of Charlotte also offers Internships during the Fall and Spring.

First preference will be given to college students who have already acquired some basic training and experience in theatre and are ready for the next step toward a career in this field.  Children’s Theatre is looking to cultivate the next generation of theatre professionals.  Anyone over the age of 16 who is interested should apply. Applicants should:

  • have a passion for working with young people

  • have a strong respect for the collaborative nature of theatre

  • be willing to engage in the creative process

  • have an excellent sense of humor

  • be reliable

Interns should know how to be part of a team, but also how and when to take initiative and get things done.

Commitment
The internship will be a 15 week commitment.
Interns will work approximately 15-20 hours per week.
Actual schedule will be determined to accommodate the availability of the intern and the needs of the theatre.


Available Internships

Audience Services
An Audience Services intern will participate in brainstorming sessions for marketing strategies, assist in the writing, editing and production of program brochures, press releases and promotional materials, maintain press lists, assemble press kits, learn how to run a box office with a computerized ticketing system, assist with group sales, mailings, subscription campaigns, ushering and greeting patrons.

Requirements: Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Publisher, excellent communication and writing skills, organized, outgoing personality.

Development
The Development intern will assist with in-depth research grant writing and report preparation; data analysis; volunteer programs and special events; mailings and daily operations.

Requirements: Excellent written and communication skills, high-level computer and analytical skills; strong attention to detail.

Education
This Internship is designed for individuals who are studying education or have a teaching background. The Education intern will assist teaching artists with daily warm-ups, acting technique and movement exercises for Enrichment classes. These classes range from scene study to Shakespeare to improvisation and everything in between. This will involve working with students age 3 through 18.  Interns will also assist with class registrations and orientation, research and create teacher resource guides, observe the Neighborhood Bridges Program, assist with data collection and program evaluations for the Drama for Healthy Living Program, visit Community Involvement Sites, assist with class and ticket scholarships and help with day to day operations.

Requirements: Excellent writing and communication skills, basic computer skills and general office skills.  Must also be organized and detail oriented.

Production
Production interns will receive hands on training while working closely with professional technicians.  Interns will attend production meetings, participate in changeovers and may even serve on the run crew for performances.  This internship will be molded around the abilities and interests of the intern.  Length of internship will vary individually depending on availability.

Carpentry: Assist in the set construction of  shows, load ins, and strikes. Must have an understanding of power tools and good carpentry skills.

Scenic Painting: Assist scenic artist with scenery and prop painting.  Must have skills in perspective, color, texture and faux finishes.

Lighting: Assist in lighting hang, strike, circuiting, focus and equipment upkeep. Must have basic knowledge of electricity and be familiar with theatrical lighting instruments.

Costumes: Assist with costume construction, alterations and repairs.  Must have basic sewing skills, know how to use a domestic sewing machine and have knowledge of costume history and vocabulary.

Props: Assist the Props Master in the creation, procuring and maintenance of all props for each show.

Sound: Assist in system installation, clear-com and monitor system hook ups as well as running the board and maintaining current show. Must have basic understanding of sound boards, amps, EQ's and effects.

Production Management: Assist in processing artists' contracts, maintaining management files and financial projects.  Must be organized, have excellent time-management skills, discretion and basic computer skills.

Stage Management: Interns will work side by side with stage managers, directors and actors. Must have stage manager experience. be organized and detail-oriented, have basic computer skills and excellent communication skills.

The World’s a Stage Internship
This internship provides opportunities to observe and experience both the artistic and the administrative functions of a non-profit  children’s theatre.  Interns will work with department managers and staff to learn the various duties that are performed in all of the departments listed.  Interns will rotate through all departments providing general support throughout the organization.

Requirements: a background in theatre, basic computer skills, strong organizational skills, excellent communication skills and enthusiasm.


Academic Credit
Children’s Theatre will help any student needing to fulfill specific credit requirements by working with faculty advisors from participating schools. All arrangements for credit must be made by intern. Please provide any paperwork with application.

Evaluations
Each intern will participate in a variety of evaluative measures with department managers and the Intern Coordinator throughout the duration of the internship.
Interns will be required to complete self-evaluation forms. There will also be periodic, face to face evaluations to discuss progress, plan for future goals and assess program expectations.
Final evaluation will be sent to faculty advisor.

Payment and Housing

We are currently offering unpaid internships.
At this time Children’s Theatre does not offer housing.
