School of Theatre Training (4th-12th Grade)
School of Theatre Training Classes are geared toward students who are dedicated to studying the skills and techniques of theatre. An audition is required for all students; every student who auditions will be admitted into the program. Students interested in a less intensive experience may be better served by the eight-week fall and winter class sessions which do not require an audition.

About the School of Theatre Training Classes

Core Classes are designed for students who have some experience in theatre and are looking to strengthen principle skills in the areas of Acting, Improvisation, Musical Theatre or Shakespeare. After completing the audition, students will register for a core class based on their interests and the suggestion of the instructors. Classes meet once a week for 90 minutes.

Intensive Classes and Specialty Classes are designed for students who demonstrate advanced skills in theatre techniques and seek a demanding and concentrated course of study. Students are assigned to an intensive or specialty class based on their audition. Classes meet once a week for 2 hours.

Performance Company, Junior Performance Company and Home School Acting Troupe provide experienced students an outlet for performance. There will be one intensive rehearsal period in the fall followed by performances in a variety of venues throughout Charlotte during the school year. Interested students must audition during Intensive/Specialty Class auditions.

Audition Dates

What to Prepare for Your Audition
CORE CLASSES: Students should prepare one monologue or one song no longer than one minute in length. Songs will be sung a cappella, without accompaniment. Students interested in the technical theatre class will be asked interview questions during the audition time and are not required to present a monologue or song.

INTENSIVE, SPECIALTY CLASSES OR PERFORMANCE COMPANIES: Students should prepare two contrasting monologues or one monologue and one song (if auditioning for a musical theatre class). Audition selections should be no longer than 90 seconds.

Preparing for the Audition: Monologues/Music/Resources

Monologues
A monologue is a speech made by one person speaking his or her thoughts aloud or directly addressing a reader, audience, or character. When selecting a monologue it is often a good idea to choose a piece from a character that is close to your experience and age. Try to select a monologue that tells an interesting story, but more importantly portrays a strong character. It is a good idea to read the entire script so you know the context of your selection. After choosing your monologue, memorize then practice. Try performing in front of a mirror and other people. Remember that acting occurs vocally as well as physically.

Music
Students who are interested in participating in a musical theatre class must also prepare a song. Your selection should be only 16 bars long (this is about 1 minute when sung). Be prepared to sing a cappella; there will be no accompanist or CD player available. When selecting a song it is a good idea to choose something that displays your range but it is more important that you feel comfortable and confident with the selection. More advanced students should select a piece that portrays a character or emotion. Musicals are a good resource for song selection. Another great resource is The 16-bar Theatre Audition compiled by Michael Dansicker.
