School of Theatre Training | Conservatory
October 2, 2019 to March 14, 2020
Placement in Conservatory is by audition only. These classes offer a more rigorous track of study for students looking for advanced training in School of Theatre Training (SOTT). They are conducted by a small group of master teaching artists, which allows for an in depth, yet flexible curriculum that meets the individualized needs of each student.
- Every session ends with a showcase for families and friends to see the materials Conservatory students have explored throughout the year. Demonstrations of exercises and activities facilitated by both students and the teaching artists surround selections of monologues, scenes and songs.
- Every Conservatory student is given a mid-point and end-of-year evaluation written by their teaching artist to track progress throughout the class. Additionally, class recommendations are given for the following year. Conservatory students must submit an audition every year; placement is not guaranteed based on the previous year’s enrollment.
- OnStage is an opportunity for Conservatory students to apply their skills in a professional theatre experience. Conservatory students are offered early registration into this program before it is offered to our Open Enrollment students in SOTT.
- Conservatory students are required to either take dance or movement classes provided by Children’s Theatre of Charlotte’s or provide a record for an outside equivalent class.
- We offer a limited amount of full and partial scholarships for tuition for classes.

In-person auditions for 2019-20 are complete. You may still submit a video audition.
Students will indicate on their audition forms for which classes they wish to be considered, and prepare different audition materials as needed. What should my student prepare?
16-32 bar cut of a song and one 60-second (maximum) monologue for the following classes:
- Young Company
- Jr. Musical Theatre Company
- Musical Theatre Company
Two 60-second, contrasting monologues (maximum of 2 minutes) for the following classes:
- Jr. Acting Company
- Acting Company
- New Works Company
All students should be prepared to dance, even actors who consider themselves non-dancers. In small groups, everyone is taught and then performs a short dance combination to assess proficiency.
For auditions, it is not required, but considered best practice to bring an additional monologue or song in the event a teaching artist requests to see additional material. Be prepared for teaching artists to ask you to perform your monologue or song multiple times with re-directs.If you have questions or would like to submit a video audition, contact Adam Montague, Early Childhood and SOTT Manager.

Students collaborate in the writing of a new play or musical with a director and playwright. Then the students rehearse and perform the touring production throughout the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. This class meets on Saturdays and may be taken concurrently with other Wednesday night Conservatory classes.
Mandatory dates for this class include: Jan. 11, 25 & Feb. 1, 8, 22.
Final Dress Rehearsal and Tour Dates from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 29 & March 7, 14.
Students train in a conservatory-style setting, rotating between acting and musical theatre focuses. This collaborative method emphasizes training of the whole actor. Topics covered during the year include Shakespeare, Michael Chekhov technique and choral vocal training. These specialized topics will also bring awareness to the student’s individual areas of needed growth. There is an expectation of additional work outside of class, including script reading and extensive memorization.Location: ImaginOn
Junior Company offers two separate tracks: Jr. Acting Company and Jr. Musical Theatre Company. Both companies focus on integrating the skills necessary for performance (beats, objectives, tactics, etc.). Acting track emphasizes strengthening the mind-body connection, cultivating observable physical choices in the student’s work, and Musical Theatre track emphasizes cultivating breathwork to make a strong emotional connection to the song and support the “story of the song.” There is an expectation of additional work outside of class, including script reading and extensive memorization. Students should arrive warmed-up and ready to begin work.Location: ImaginOn
Company offers two separate tracks: Acting Company and Musical Theatre Company. Students work in a masterclass setting performing and receiving feedback on materials prepared/memorized outside of class. Acting track provides specializations including deeper exploration of psychological gesture (Chekhov), and Musical Theatre track provides specializations including advanced vocal training and breathwork. There is an expectation of additional work outside of class as assigned by the professional teaching artists. Students should arrive warmed-up and ready to begin work.Location: ImaginOn
