Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is dedicated to the idea that drama is an integral part of the human experience. The Learning Through Drama program (LTD) is designed to offer young people the opportunity to learn in a dynamic, fun and challenging way. LTD residencies, which last three days, are designed to place a drama specialist in the classroom to address curriculum-based units of study. These residencies have been created to specifically support the goals and objectives put forth in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS).

Story Drama and Pantomime
Preschool
Young learners explore characters, story and sequence through creative movement and story dramatization.

Rhyme and Reason
Grades K-1
Students practice the alphabet, counting and creating characters from a story while learning pantomime.
NCSCOS English Language Arts Goal: Apply strategies and skills to comprehend text that is read, heard and viewed.

Students explore the roles people play in the community and practice cooperation and teamwork.

All About Weather
Grades 1-2
Students identify weather terms and explore weather concepts through improvisation and dramatization.

The Rainforest
Adaptable for grades 1 to 5
Students are introduced to facts regarding the rainforest as they bring characters to life and experience rainforest sights and sounds.

The Great Shape Mystery
Grade 2
Students explore the connection between shapes and fractions.

Writing Legends
Grade 3
Students learn the characteristics of a legend and will ultimately create and dramatize an original legend.

People of the Piedmont
Grade 4
Students identify and explore the five settler groups of the Piedmont area and gain understanding of history through role play.

Taking Care of Our Earth
Grades 4-5
Students explore the effects of recycling and conserving resources.

Grades 5-8

FAQs and booking information

What is the length of the residencies?
Each residency takes place over three days at 50 minutes per class.
How many classes may participate?
There is a minimum of two classes and a maximum of four classes per day. Classes must be sequential. There is a maximum of 30 students per class.
Teacher Participation
Teachers meet with the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte drama specialists prior to the first day of the residency and touch base during the course of the residency. In these meetings the teachers and the drama specialists plan and process classroom visits and coordinate their efforts so that they may work together as partners in the classroom.
How much does a residency cost?
Three-day residency (two classes): $600
Three-day residency (three classes): $900
Three-day residency (four classes): $1,200
The cost includes all teaching materials and travel. There is addition travel fee of $20 per visit for schools outside the Charlotte city limit and $40 per visit outside of Mecklenburg County.
How do I book a residency?
Send an email to the Education Department at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte with details on which Residency you are interested in booking. Residencies are subject to teacher availability and early booking ensures better availability. Contact us
How can I afford a residency?
Some schools use funds provided by the PTA cultural arts budget. Some schools use monies from their departmental instructional budget. There are some opportunities for special projects grants and arts education programming.
