Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need prior theatre experience?

Our camps and classes are a great fit for children with and without prior theatre experience. Certain classes and camps have prerequisites, but there is an entry point for all ages.

Why aren't classes held on stage?

Classes

Our year-long curriculum is focused on process, rather than final product. The classroom provides a non-threatening environment for creative investigation and reinforces the concept that theatre can be created anywhere. Our classrooms better serve the more informal exploration of stories during Creative Drama and the more formal skills-based instruction of School of Theatre Training.

Summer Camps

Our Summer Camp curriculum also emphasizes process, but during some Performance Camps and Teen Studios, students perform their final presentations on our stages in the McColl Family Theatre or the Wells Fargo Playhouse.

Can I stay with my child during class or camp?

Classes

There are opportunities throughout the Creative Drama and School of Theatre Training sessions to observe classes. For the first day of the session, there is a mandatory orientation for parents/caregivers. Additionally, there is a mid-session drop-in to observe the class. On the final day of the session, friends and family are invited to watch a presentation of materials covered.

Summer Camps

Except for parents/caregivers of Early Childhood students, there is no orientation for the first day of the session. On the final day of the session, friends and family are invited to watch a presentation of materials covered.

What are the differences between programs at different locations or online?

In-Person Camps & Classes

The only difference between offerings at ImaginOn or a satellite campus is the location itself. We employ the same teaching artists, curriculum, and high standards across all our programming. Satellite locations are offered for your convenience to serve as much of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community as possible.

Digital Camps & Classes

Our digital offerings, taking place online through Zoom, are taught by the same professional teaching artists as our in-person classes and camps, offering a safe, flexible environment for education from the comfort of your home. Some camps or classes may feature an abridged schedule and are priced accordingly.

How quickly do classes and camps fill to capacity?

In-Person Camps & Classes

Our classes and camps fill quickly so you are encouraged to register as soon as schedules become available. Classes and camps are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
